It's a Family Tradition

We all have our traditions that may seem different to others or maybe something noones ever heard of. Some traditions bring people and family closer together. And those are the traditions that matter the most.

One of my families traditions is the Bacon roast. For this you only need a few things:

Bread (preferable homemade but store bought works fine too)
Radishes
Onions
salt
pepper
paprika
Big slabs of bacon (of course)
And most importantly...... FAMILY!

This was our Adventure:

You get the bread and cut it into thick pieces

Then you lay them out on some cooking sheets or where ever you prefer

My oldest and I cut up the radishes and onions

My middle child and my dad places some onion and radish on each piece of bread

Still placing the stuff on the bread

Then apply alittle salt

Then a little pepper

Finally add Paprika....we use sweet paprika

Apply it generously

You repeat this on as many trays as desired

Now its time for the bacon. You get the slab and cut it to smaller workable pieces

Cut the edges a little to allow for the cooking process to work

Prepare your cooking area so you have easy access to the fire and to the bread for applying the bacon

After you cook the bacon for a little bit then you see the fat starting to drip off... or as I call it "Bacon juice". Immediately press the bacon to the bread to allow for the bread so soak up the juices

And there you have it. Bacon bread. The only thing needed is the most important ingredient

FAMILY!... everything is better with family

And then where there is fire... there is always room for Smores.

So that is one of my families traditions. To some it may seem weird or maybe the concept of Bacon bread baffles you. But its more about getting the family together and having fun. If you were looking for something new to do with your family then why not light  up that fire and make yourself some bacon bread. Its never too late to start a new family tradition for your family

When life gives you corn...you make chowder

This week we decided to make some Corn chowder. Why? Because I gave my veggie loving daughter the cook book and said "Find something yummy we can make". It worked out nice because we already had corn and a bunch of other ingredients. We just needed a few things from the store.

*note to self: Try to avoid the grocery store on the weekend of a holiday

Here is the recipe:

Im liking this nutritional chart this cook book adds in

Also a quick note before you go out buying this stuff. You might need to plan better than I did. I didn't realize that the recipe called for grilling the Pablano peppers and it wasnt exactly the best day to do grill outside do to the weather.

Here is our adventure:

My oldest doing her favorite thing...chopping stuff

Such a goof

We added all the ingredients as the times came

saute.... such a fancy word

She always loves adding the stock
Simmering to perfection

Final product all yummy looking

Overall it was a very simple recipe as most of mine are. I have a plan to try to get my kids to pick a fish recipe next week and a separate recipe for a side to go with it... cant make any promises though.

I bought a bunch of stuff for cooking outside one of these nice weekends to change things up. So be ready for some outdoorsy recipes to come once this weather stops being so depressing on weekends.

Rating time!!!
Girls: 3/3 thought it was yummy and just added alittle extra salt and pepper.
Mine: I really liked it and I also added more salt and pepper. I ended up eating most of it myself.... dont judge me!!!

Remember this weekend to keep those in mind who paid the ultimate cost so we can live out lives the way we do. Memorial day isn't for those currently serving like myself for my fellow sailors and soldiers. Its for those who have fallen to give us our freedoms to make our dreams possible.

Getting them veggies daily and a bonus at the end

Last week we didn't do a recipe because we spent the weekend away from home so my kids could spend time with their mother on mothers day. But this week we decided to crack open another new cook book and give it a try. Its a very yummy veggie soup.

Here is the recipe:

This new book gives the nutrional info too... pretty neat

My kids had alot of fun making this one. Its not hard to make and there was plenty of steps my two youngest could help with

Here's our adventure:

My oldest doing her favorite part. She knows how to use a knife so boys beware haha

Time to saute the onions

My middle child adding the tomatoes (I didnt feel like peeling tomatoes myself)

My youngest adding Oregano and Cumin

Pouring in the veggie stock

She added the other veggies as the recipe called for them and then she struck a pose....future fashion model here

almost ready

All done and ready to eat.... looks so GOOOOD!!!

We had lots of fun making this one. Everyone helped out and it was such a happy moment. I think one thing that makes it the most fun is seeing all the ingredients come together and seeing the finished product. Then enjoying the result of the whole things. Cooking is so much fun

Rating time!!!
My girls: 1/3 actually ate it. My middle child has had an upset tummy and didn't want to eat. My youngest kept snacking and was too full. But my oldest at it and she said it was really good

My rating: I thought it was absolutely delicious and I had three bowls haha. Defintely a recipe worth keeping

BONUS ADVENTURE!!!!
My dad made a statement about needing to use up his old bananas. So I immediately took to the internet to find uses for old bananas. I was thinking about Banana bread but wanted to be different. And then I stumbled upon a page that had many uses for old bananas and I picked a simple and sweet recipe for Banana milkshakes.

For two Large glasses it requires:
3 Bananas (placed in bag and put in freezer until frozen)
3 scoops of ice cream
1/2cup milk
4 drops vanilla essence
1 sprinkle of cinnamon

1. You place the Banana, ice cream, milk, and vanilla in a blender and blend it together
2. pour into a glass and sprinkle the cinnamon on top
3. enjoy

Very simple and very very very delicious use for old bananas.

I hope you enjoyed this weeks entry.

As always if you have a recipe you want me and my kids to try then don't hesitate to let me know

Cupcakes of the Galaxy

Sometimes things in life just line up in a perfect way. Take this weekend for example. Next week my middle child has a celebration in school to celebrate her birthday. So I wanted to do something related to that for our weekend recipe to kill two birds with one stone. But what to do? That is always the difficult part of any plan. Then I realized that the Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 was coming out this weekend and it hit me. Why not make galaxy cupcakes?... so that is what we did. It was a new level for our recipe making. We didn't just make the cupcakes but we also made the icing as well.

My mother used to bake all the time and she said she enjoyed doing it. She'd make cakes of all kinds. every shape and size you could imagine for every occasion you could imagine. And I can see why. It was alot of work but boy was it fun!

Here is the link to the recipe I used: Galaxy Cupcake

And here was our adventure:

Here is my two oldest adding the first of the ingredients

My Middle child then started prepping the cupcake pan

While my oldest and youngest team up to continue the batter process
Mixing things up

and more mixing

I used an ice cream scooper to fill the pan. It was so much easier than trying to pout it

Some of them came out alittle burnt but still looking good

Cupcakes all dressed to impress. I was having too much fun to remember to take pictures of the icing making.... just imagine the messiest mess three kids their dad could make trying to mix cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar together.

So much fun doing this. We started pretty early in the day and before we knew it hours had passed. We had time to finish two batches and relax for alittle bit before it was time to go out to the movies and see Guardians of the Galaxy.

Rating time:
My girls: My two youngest said "mmmm hiashfisdfinsafbb" which I can only imagine means "mmmm This is so good". My oldest said that they were the perfect amount of chocolate

My rating: For the cupcakes I thought they were amazing. And the cream cheese icing brought the wholes thing together. For the movie: It was great. Alot of funny moments, alot of sad moments, and a lot of action. They really made a good sequel to continue the guardians story.

So for all those who dont feel like reading.

TL;DR: We made cupcakes that were awesome, saw a movie that was also awesome, and made one heck of a lot of memories.
